Maths is one of the four specific areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), divided into:
Numbers – learning to count and the value of numbers, higher and lower, calculating more and less, solving problems and using money.
Shape, Space and Measure – understanding size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money and comparing quantities, objects and solving problems.
Children learn about maths through play and their daily experiences. And the more meaningful to them and hands on it is, the better.
We also use Numicon, a multi sensory teaching resource which helps children to visualise and make connections between numbers from an early age.
