Newsletter 1 – Autumn Term 2015
Thursday 3rd September

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to St. Michael’s after the summer break. We look forward to seeing children new to St. Michael’s and welcome our new teaching staff. We wish everyone a happy and fulfilling Autumn Term.
Mrs. J. Leach is now Mrs. McGuiheen (pronounced McGeean).

The staff enjoyed superb training on Tuesday from Sharon Amensu on the “Growth Mindset”.
How does a Growth Mindset Help Your Child?
– Helps pupils to embrace challenge
– Encourages intrinsic motivation
– Develops Collaborative Skills
– Promotes steady progress and high scholastic achievement and outcomes
– Builds skills for high level of achievement beyond school life
This training will set the context for teaching this year. It is my intention to share more on this at the initial parents’ meetings, and create an information sheet for those unable to attend.

To remind you of the schedule of meetings:
Monday 7th September Y1 3.00 p.m.
Tuesday 8th September Y2 3.00 p.m.
Wednesday 9th September Y3 3.00 p.m.
Thursday 10th September Y4/Y5 3.00 p.m.
Friday 11th September Y6 3.00 p.m.
I hope you are able to attend these sessions to gain an overview for the year with your child’s class teacher. Please note Y5 session is now scheduled for Thursday, not Friday as originally communicated – apologies for any inconvenience.

Only a few parents were able to attend the high quality session led by ex barrister Sharon Amensu at 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday 1st September. Everyone who attended, including governors felt it was really beneficial. I need to calculate interest as to whether to run this informative session again for parents, as obviously there are cost implications. Please complete the return slip attached if you are interested.

PTA
Currently Miss Nina Mathers and Mrs. Nicky Clarke are organising the Michaelmas Fair. I will arrange a meeting for the PTA to establish a new chairperson and work out who could lead each of the key events this academic year in order to spread the workload.

Please see me if you are interested in leading/co-ordinating the Movie Night on Friday 18th December, the Easter Event on 19th March, or if you have ideas for mini fundraisers during ‘Book Week’ in March or Sports Day in June. As always, we appreciate and value parents’ contribution of time and effort to such events.

Uniform
May I remind parents that the new uniform is being phased in. I am keen that all the children wear our PE kit to encourage smartness and uniformity. Once your child outgrows his/her yellow PE t-shirt, please purchase a replacement, which now has a school logo, from our suppliers, StitchDesign.

Charities
School will continue to support MacMillan annually. The coffee morning is on Friday 2nd October. Mrs. Hilton and Mrs. Leach will be coordinating the event. School will also support Francis House at Christmas by selling their small gift items.

Assemblies
These will be based on the parables, and Christian values displayed in the hall around the ‘tree’.

Commemorative Coins
Many of you will have seen on the news 01/09/2015 that the Royal Mint has produced a commemorative coin. On Wednesday 9th September 2015 our present Queen will become Britain’s longest reigning Monarch serving our country for 63 years, 7 months and 4 days, exceeding the record set by Queen Victoria. To celebrate this historic royal event Tower Mint are proud to present the latest in our 2015 collector medal range for schools and councils.
If you wish to purchase them from school please complete the form below. (We are required to have a minimum order of 50.) We will have a special assembly on 9th September 2015.

Update of contact/medical information
If your details have changed in any way, e-mail, mobile or home tel. no., address, marital status, child’s medical information or emergency contact, please inform the school office.
